Night of Museums in the Royal Łazienki

Admission free visits to the renovated Old Orangery and the Palace on the Isle, the „Flowers in a Glass Vase” painting exhibition (by Abraham Mignon), and a jazz concert by Grzech Piotrowski – these are the main attractions of the Night of Museums in the Royal Łazienki, which will be held on 14 May. Our visitors will also receive commemorative coins.

At this year’s Night of Museums, during several evening hours, until 2:00 a.m., it will be possible to see the Royal Łazienki in an interesting, nocturnal perspective.

The visits to the Old Orangery will start at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the Royal Sculpture Gallery and the Royal Theatre, visitors will see the „Treasures of the Warsaw Mint 1766-1868 exhibition, organised for the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Mint of Poland.

In front of the entrance to the Old Orangery, an 19th century knuckle-joint press will be displayed; it will press coins, which have been specially designed for this occasion and which will be given to our guests as souvenirs.

In the Palace on the Isle – between 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. – we invite visitors to the stately rooms of this classicist building, and to visit the exhibition of the famous painting from the Mauritshuis Museum in the Hague „Flowers in a Glass Vase”, by Abraham Mignon.

In front of the Palace on the Isle, a minter will stand; it will press commemorative badges for the visitors to the Royal Łazienki for the occasion of the Night of Museums.

Without a doubt, the attraction of the evening will be the jazz concert by Grzech Piotrowski – a remarkable musician and composer. At 9:30 p.m., he will perform the „One World” project on a specially built scene on the water in front of the Palace on the Isle. The exceptional music will be accompanied by illuminations.

The Museum’s sponsor – PZU – will prepare a multimedia zone for visitors near the Officer Cadets School, where commemorative pictures from the visit to the Royal Łazienki will be printed.

WYD, Krakow 2016

The World Youth Day (WYD) is an event organized by the Catholic Church which gathers young people from around the world with the Pope.

The WYD is held annually in each diocese of the world on Palm Sunday, with a main ceremony at the Vatican. However, every two or three years, a major international meeting in a host city is made. This ceremony is presided over by the Pope. This last meeting, of several days (usually a week), is commonly associated with the name of World Youth Day.

This initiative originated in the idea of Pope Paul VI, whom in the Holy Year of 1975 met in Rome several thousand young people representing many countries, after his participation in the „First International March of Christian reconciliation” that crossed the path of San Francisco, between Assisi and Rome. In 1984 during the papacy of John Paul II it was carried out a new global call, to encourage youth participation in the Church, coming to gather more than five million people during the 1995 edition, held in Manila, Philippines.

In 1997, World Day gave a change becoming a youth festival lasting three days before the closing ceremony. Thereafter, it has been organized successively in Paris, Rome, Toronto, Cologne, Sydney and Madrid. The edition of 2013 it was held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, presided by Pope Francisco. There it was announced that the next edition of the conference will be held in Krakow, this year, from 25 to 31 of July.
