Planetarium (Gdynia)

The A. Ledóchowski planetarium in Gdynia constitutes a separate facility within a complex of buildings of the Faculty of Navigation of Gdynia Maritime University. It was constructed during the 1971- 1978 years and it was opened on 14 October 1979 after the simulation devices had been installed. The main aim of the planetarium’s construction was the creation of astronavigation laboratory for the students of the Higher Sea University at that time. However, the possibility of running popularization activity for the residents of the Tri-City, visiting groups and tourists, as well as the possibility of conducting astronomy classes for the pupils of Tri-City schools, was also taken into consideration. The central section of the planetarium is a projection room with comfortable seats for 44 people organized under an 8 metre diameter dome. The dome’s fringing is covered with models of characteristic Tri-City buildings and topographic details of the coastline reflecting the real view seen by an observer from the centre of the Bay of Gdańsk.

Świętojańska Street in Gdynia

The Świętojańska Street is the most import and representative street in Gdynia, it is 1800 metre long and 24 metre wide. There are 150 tenement houses and a few hundred of places such as shops, restaurants or service points located along this street.

Due to a great number of shops the Świętojańska street was also called a “shopping saloon” of Gdynia. After the transformation of the political system in 1989 the state owned centres have quickly been replaced with private shops and boutiques which often sell luxurious products – mainly clothes and shoes.
It was the first street in Gdynia, apart from streets leading to the sea, which was paved and arranged according to a new plan of the city at that time. A dynamic construction of the city, among others, took place along this street.
