The District Museum in Nowy Sącz is building an exhibition-educational sector called the Little Galician Town. The reconstruction of a part of small town’s architecture consists of a little market square and frontages with houses. So far five buildings have been finished: a town hall, two middle – class houses from Stary Sącz, a manor house from Łososina Górna and a fire station. The market itself and houses surrounding it from the north, east and south will be completed in the next few years.
The town as a “living structure“ (functioning in an everyday rhythm stores, workshops, restaurants and cafes) will recall the memories of Galicia, the old province of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy at the turn of the 19th/20thcentury. The west frontage encloses the town hall. It has a slender tower and arcades around. The town hall is a replica of the building, which supposed to be the house of local authorities in Stary Sącz, however after a fire, it was never completed. Now it functions as an elegant venue with a conference - hotel section. There is a reception, cafe and an exhibition hall on the ground floor. On the upper floor there is a reading-room and a spacious conference hall equipped with multimedia devices. Twelve furnished stylish hotel rooms occupy the top floor.
Next to the town hall, there are two burgher houses from Stary Sącz. One of them is a photographer’s atelier and a watchmaker’s workshop. The other one is a potter’s house. The manor house from Łososina Górna is to the west. It is separated from the rest of the buildings with a quite large garden with stone paved alleys and stylish lanterns. The classicistic building is a reconstruction of its original, which was totally destroyed in the seventies of the last century. On the main floor of the building, there is a library with a vast book collection, recently transferred from the Gothic House- the head office of the District Museum in Nowy Sącz. In the attic, there are also four hotel rooms and two office rooms.
A fire station has always been an essential element of village and small town’s architecture. Therefore, it could not be missed here, in the Sącz Little Galician Town. In this tiny building with a characteristic turret and large doors, we have gathered a variety of fire equipment. These are: carts, helmets, fire-hooks, fire hoses and fire pumps; in one sentence – everything what firemen need and what young boys are so interested in, while dreaming of their future honorable duty in a fire department.
The next stage (under construction since late 2007) will be also attractive. In a few years time, several buildings will rise around the market. Three of them, originating from Krościenko will house: a little shop with souvenirs, a second hand bookshop, a workshop of a craftsman who makes wooden toys and decorations and a separate exhibition dedicated to amateur artists from Paszyn who have painted on glass and practiced sculpture for generations.
On the galician market you will also find: a retro style pharmacy, a Jewish tailor’s workshop, a cake shop and a post office. The smell of cinnamon and coffee will attract visitors to the colonial shop while the aroma of regional dishes will invite them to visit the inn (where formerly the life of Orawa’s inhabitants concentrated in). Ladies will not surly miss the hairstylist, because there, gossiping goes so smoothly like nowhere else. The Little Town like in the past epoch Piwniczna, Stary Sącz, Lanckorona or Krościenko will live to the rhythm of clattering wooden cartwheels, tower clock’s chime and the din from the inn, stores, and workshops. Everything will be easy to touch, try and taste. The Little Galician Town will not only be an attraction by itself but also the gate to the Ethnographic Park where time has really stopped.
